GROUSE
Grouse is a group of non-migratory
birds that encompasses a number of species that live in temperate and subarctic
regions of the northern hemisphere. Grouse are a game animal and are hunted for
food.
Males are often polygamous, and many
species have elaborate courtship displays. Grouse can be identified easily when
in hand because they have legs feathered to the toes.
Grouse feed mainly on vegetable food,
but will also feed on insects, especially when feeding young.
Ruffed Grouse is one of the most wide
spread and popular species of grouse with hunters. The ruffed grouse is a
medium-sized game bird that is well know for courtship displays.
Ruffed grouse come in two color phases,
a reddish brown phase and a grayish brown phase. The gray-phased birds or most
abundant in the northern areas of its range.
Ruffed grouse go by a number of
different common names such as partridge, ruffled grouse, drummer and woods
pheasant.
Foxes, bobcat, coyotes, hawks will prey
on grouse.
